Over the years, Efrat Kisoss Machlis has evolved into an architect who works on long-term projects together with her clients, overseeing architectural initiatives with big budgets. The planning and design language of each hotel is the foundation on which its marketing strategy rests. Every open space, room and hall shares the unique design signature of that hotel.
What do you bring that ensures big-name developers remain loyal to you over many years?
“The CEOs and the owners know that working with me is a weight off their shoulders – I’ll meet their deadlines and budgetary constraints with Swiss precision. They put their faith in me, entrusting me with huge budgets, and I repay them with loyalty and reliability. I quickly get a sense for what they’re looking for and I have the ability to make it happen. I’m not a lone wolf, I enjoy the collaboration. I understand what the client wants their project to convey, and I find the right way to create a shared experience – the golden mean.”
How did you get into architecture?
“I grew up somewhere far removed from civilisation, a small moshav – a type of agricultural community – in the Arava Desert in southern Israel. My parents had moved there ‘to settle the borders and to create something from nothing.’ I learned from the best architects in the world: the Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron. I completed my education in the USA, at the Massachusetts College of Art, and following that I did my specialisation in the offices of ARC in Cambridge, Boston. I also lived and worked in Italy for a number of years. Whenever I go back to visit the moshav in the desert, I readjust immediately, I revert to my childhood lifestyle. Even in New York, London or Herzeliyya Pituach, I know how to transition seamlessly between the different worlds, taking the best of each and incorporating it into my architecture.”
What services does your firm provide?
“We are a leading specialist in the planning and design of hotels, public buildings and work spaces in Israel and abroad.
We design private homes, luxury apartments, office buildings, public buildings, shops, restaurants and even gyms.”
What were some of your most memorable projects?
“A tourist village spread over ten acres of land in Montenegro, the Oasis Hotel and Herods Hotel by the Dead Sea, the King George Hostel in Jerusalem, the Leonardo Club Hotel in Tiberias, the King Solomon Hotel in Netanya and so many more…”
What are your hopes for the future?
“At the moment we’re investing and expanding into Cyprus, Greece and Sri Lanka. My next big challenge is to plan a large-scale hotel or real estate project in one of those countries.”
